During the first half of the 20th century, the May 4th movement led the wave of Chinese ideological emancipation, while western writers’ works and modern literary theories were widely translated into China. In this context, a large number of female writers have emerged in the Chinese literary arena. These female writers have explored the path of literary creation and formed their unique writing style, creating plentiful excellent works. Among the works, autobiographical novel has become the favorite style of many female writers, and childhood life is their preferred theme. The Tales of Hulan River (finished in 1940, Hongkong, by Xiao Hong), Ancient Melodies (started in 1938, Sichuan, and published in 1953, Britain, by Ling Shuhua) and Memories of Peking: South Side Stories (published in 1960, Taiwan, by Lin Haiyin) are representative works of modern female autobiographical novels. Different family background and childhood experiences notwithstanding, the three writers show strong internal consistency in their works: they trace their initial stage of life with tender and evocative language, presenting changes of society in specific historical period from children’s perspective. It is worth noting that the three novels possess distinct feminist color. What life were girls going through, what difficulties and awakening were women generally experiencing in China at the beginning of the 20th century, and what impact did childhood experience have on the future career of the three writers? The three novels not only carry the writers’ personal life experience, but also preserve a testimony to a unique past of the female group and the whole society. This paper utilizes the method of close reading of the texts Tales of Hulan River, Ancient Melodies and Memories of Peking: South Side Stories for case study, through synchronic analysis of the three texts’ content, exhibiting the daily life of Chinese girls and outlook of the society in early 20th century; meanwhile, by summarizing content selection and narrative strategies of the three texts, the paper concludes multidimensional significances of childhood narrative in modern female writers autobiographical novels, and provides a new perspective for future research on the three writers and history of modern literature. The paper is composed of the following five parts: the first chapter “Introduction” mainly introduces the background and value of the paper topic, relative research status, as well as the design of this paper; the second chapter “Definitions of ‘autobiographical novel’ and ‘childhood narrative’” first clarifies the relationship between autobiography and autobiographical novel, and then gives the two concepts clear definitions and connotation illuminations; the third chapter “Content orientation of childhood narrative” explores the similarities and differences of the three texts from multiple perspectives by means of close reading; the fourth chapter “Functions and values of childhood narrative” analyzes the significances of childhood narrative in the study of modern female writers and their works from the perspectives of writers’ life, development of history, novel structure, language style and perspective selection; the last chapter “Epilogue” sorts out the whole paper, summarizes the contemporary significance of the thesis and points out improvement of future research.
