《教育杂志》是由上海商务印书馆于1909年2月创办的一份专业教育刊物,1948年终刊,历时40年,共出版33卷,385期。《教育杂志》的问世,首开中国图书出版单位创办教育期刊的先河。《教育杂志》以其刊期长、影响大而在中国近代教育期刊发展史上占有十分突出的位置。由于受时局动荡的影响,《教育杂志》在其发展历程中两度停刊,数次迁徙,艰难曲折,人员几经更迭,但不改初衷,坚守信念,对当时的教育产生了重大影响,成为我国近代教育史上一道独特的风景线,一座巨大的知识宝库。它既为我们了解过去的教育提供了大量珍贵的资料,也可为我们办好今天的教育提供宝贵的历史智慧。对《教育杂志》的专门研究不仅可以填补期刊史和商务史的空白,也可以拓展和丰富教育史的研究领域,因此具有重要的学术价值和现实意义。本研究的主要内容可分为两大方面,一是初步梳理了《教育杂志》四十年的发展过程,描述了各个阶段办刊宗旨以及栏目设置的变化,考证了《教育杂志》的创刊日期、创办人、创办动机、历任主编等基本史实,得出了一些新认识,提出了一些新观点。主要有:《教育杂志》的确切创刊日期是1909年2月15日;具体创办人是陆费逵,而不是夏瑞芳和张元济;为推销教科书而创办《教育杂志》的说法是一种庸俗化的观点,应该从商务的出版宗旨和文化追求看《教育杂志》的创办动机;第一次对《教育杂志》的主编情况进行了考证,特别是基于历史事实对为商务所忽略的朱元善作了客观评价,肯定了他对商务的期刊事业所做出的贡献;初步总结了教育杂志的营销策略,对历次征文活动进行了梳理,初步考证了经营业绩。二是以近代学制变革、会考制度、教师问题和儿童问题为例,详细论述了《教育杂志》在这些问题上所进行的卓有成效的研究,从而展示了《教育杂志》对近代教育发展的促进和引领作用。提出的新观点有:以大量翔实的材料揭示了《教育杂志》在近代历次学制改革中所发挥的积极作用;《教育杂志》对会考制度的讨论及其所展示的科学态度和历史智慧;依据《教育杂志》所提供的材料,总结了我国近代对教师专业化问题所作的早期探索,评述了二三十年代对师范教育制度的批评与反思,以及教师待遇问题的研究。特别是在教师专业化方面,对“1955年召开的世界教师专业组织会议率先研讨了教师专业问题,推动了教师专业组织的形成和发展。”这一几乎为所有研究教师专业化问题的人们所认可的结论提出了质疑,并得出了“我国学者对教师专业化问题的关注,基本是与世界同步进行的”观点;较为详细地论述了《教育杂志》在介绍儿童本位教育理论、儿童观以及儿童图书馆等方面所做出的贡献。本研究虽是对《教育杂志》的专门研究,但与《教育杂志》所包含的丰富内容比,只能说是一个初步的探索,其所蕴涵的巨大学术价值仍有待于继续深入挖掘。

The Textual Research on The Chinese Educational Review and Modern Education ABSTRACT The Chinese Educational Review, a professional education periodical, was started by the Shanghai Commercial Press in February of 1909 and it lasted for forty years until 1948 with a total publication of 33 volumes and 385 issues. Its advent initiated the history of starting education periodicals by Chinese publishing houses, and it occupied a prominent position in the development of education periodicals in modern China for its long publication period and great influence. Due to the turbulent political situation, its publication was forced to stop twice and to migrant for several times. Though it experienced difficulties and frequent personnel changes, it stuck to its original intention and belief, and thus greatly influenced the education at that time. Consequently, it became an outstanding treasure-house of knowledge in modern Chinese education history which not only offers a great deal of precious materials for our understanding of education in the past, but also provides us with valuable historical wisdom for the development of the present education. The specialized research on it fills in the study gaps of the periodical history as well as the history of the Commercial Press, and in the meantime broadens and enriches the research field of educational history. Therefore, the research on The Chinese Educational Review is of great academic value and of realistic significance.The research paper is composed of two parts. Firstly, it sorts out the development of The Chinese Educational Review in forty years, describes the aim of the publication at different stages and the changes of columns offered, and makes a textual research on such historical facts as the starting date, the founders, the intention and the successive chief editors of the periodical. Based on these, the research draws some new conclusions and advances some new ideas. They are listed as follows: the exact starting date is February 15, 1909 and its founder is Lu Feikui rather than Xia Ruifang and Zhang Yuanji; the intention of starting the periodical should be considered from the perspective of business publication and cultural pursuit instead of from the vulgar perspective of promoting the selling of course books. The research for the first time makes a textual research about the chief editors, and based on historical facts, it especially makes an objective evaluation about chief editor Zhu Yuanshan, who was not included by the Commercial Press and comments positively on his contributions to the cause of commercial periodicals. Moreover, it preliminarily summarizes the marketing strategies of education periodicals, sorts out the successive solicited articles and makes a research of its management achievements.Secondly, taking for instance the modern school system reform, the general examination system and issues such as teachers and children, the research elaborates in great detail the great achievements accomplished by The Chinese Educational Review in the study of these issues and manifests its promoting and leading function in the modern education development. The new ideas advanced include the following: with rich and accurate materials, the research reveals not only the positive role that The Chinese Educational Review played in the successive school system reform in modern history but also its discussion about the general examination system and the scientific approach and historical wisdom it displayed. In addition, based on the materials The Chinese Educational Review provided, it generalizes the earlier exploration about teacher professionalization in modern China and comments on the criticism and reflection on the normal education system in 1920s and 1930s as well as teachers’ treatment. Especially in the field of teacher professionalization, it challenges the commonly accepted conclusion by almost all those engaged in the research of teacher professionalization, that is, “the world conference of teachers’ professional organization held in 1955 first discussed the issue of teacher professionalization and promoted the formation and development of teachers’ professional organization”. Finally, it draws the conclusion that the concentration of Chinese scholars on teacher professionalization syncronized with that of the world, and offers a detailed elaboration about the contributions that The Chinese Educational Review has made to the introduction of child-based education theory, view of children and children’s library.Though the research conducted is specialized in The Chinese Educational Review, when compared with the rich contents contained in it, it is just a preliminary research, the academic value of which deserves further investigation.
