外文摘要:
This research study is about how students choose their majors at university in Cambodia. The way students choose their majors are somewhat complicated and involves a number of process. Cambodian students seem to have a different view on how to choose their majors at the university. The research is conducted in order to find out about this view and how students should choose their majors at the university. A literature review was conducted to provide a list of possible factors influencing choice of major. These were categorized into two groups. Some authors have used an economic model, which sees student choice as a cost benefit analysis looking to their future career. Others have used a sociological model, which sees student choice as shaped or determined by elements in their environment. In order to conduct this research study, the researcher adopts a qualitative method by conducting interviews with 8 participants from one university in Cambodia. Based on the findings, students consider different factors when choosing their majors. Some students choose their major based on expected earnings, interest, qualifications, and so on. Some students do not possess any information about the majors at the university. They just choose their majors by chance. Also, some students study two majors at the same time. The students who are studying two majors mentioned that studying two majors means that the majors can complement each other in order to achieve their dream career. The study concludes that none of the theoretical approaches satisfactorily explains or predicts student choice of major, mainly because students are lacking in information about the choice they have to make.
