Svidrigaylov in Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment" is a subplot character who embodies moral degradation. He completely sheds any sense of guilt, yet ultimately despairs and commits suicide due to the inability to restore the moral "punishment" on an emotional level. His existential anguish serves as the logical starting point for his demise. Instead of guilt, his existential anguish functions as a form of "punishment," both destructive and redemptive, leading to his self-destruction while also driving him to seek salvation. The core of his self-redemption lies in moral renewal, but his failure in this endeavor leads him to suicide. The novel primarily illustrates his awareness and actions toward self-redemption through his interactions with Dunya and his dreams on the eve of his suicide. The profound contradictions in his tragic fate can be understood through his questioning of the meaning of life and the symbolic significance of his death. |
