Although psychological time is an illusion that is constructed in order to perceive the continuity of events, it does play a crucial rule in event representation, helping people adapt to the dynamic world. However, the effect of subjective time experience on the event perception is not fully investigated. Representational momentum (RM) is an example of the localization bias phenomenon of dynamic events, which is a memory distortion that the final position of a moving object is perceived and remembered to be further along the moving trajectory compared to the actual position. According to previous findings, we hypothesized that rhythmic auditory stimuli affects subjective sense of time and influences the magnitude of displacement in the RM task. We manipulated subjective sense of time by presenting rhythmic auditory stimuli with different tempo when the participants viewed short videos of a moving dot and complete RM tasks by pointing the remembered final location of the dot using cursor. The present study also measured individual difference in subjective sense of time with a duration reproduction task, and examined the relation between individual difference in subjective sense of time and that of RM. As manipulation check, participants are instructed to do a 2AFC task, in which they will choose between 2 moving dots with the same speed but accompanied by different auditory tempo, about which one has a higher speed. The result shows that the sound stimuli can induce a change of perceived speed, but not the displacement in the RM task. We discussed the potential reasons from the aspects of experimental design, multisensory integration and attentional modulation. However, it is found that the individual difference in the subjective sense of time is correlated with displacement, consistent with the hypothesized link between subjective sense of time and visuospatial processing. The result may inspire further investigation in the mechanism of time and event perception, and the integration and interaction of temporal-spatial information. |
