阿芙拉•贝恩是英国历史上最早的职业女作家之一。她一生著作颇丰,在短短的20年的写作生涯中,她创作了十九部戏剧作品、十四个中短篇小说、大量诗歌以及长篇书信体小说《一个贵公子与妻妹之间的情书》,在诗歌,戏剧、小说等方面都取得了一定的成就,在17世纪下半期的英国文坛上产生了不小的影响力。作为一个特立独行的女作家,她的一生以及她的文坛命运,都是一个传奇。从17世纪的毁誉参半到18世纪遭到彻底否定,从19世纪沉潜坛底、少有人问津到20世纪重新被发现、重见天日,三个半世纪的浮浮沉沉,为这个女作家平添了不少神秘的色彩。面对一些批评家的指责和道德批判,她毫不退缩,坚忍不拔地继续创作,在小说和戏剧写作方面都进行着持续的探索和创新,并时而回击批评家们的指摘,认为自己之所以受到严厉的批评,原因不是别的,完全在于自己不幸生为一个女人。20世纪中期以来,随着女性主义“重新发现”历史上被遗忘的优秀女作家的浪潮的兴起,阿芙拉再度引起学者和批评家们的热切关注,一些学者更是将其尊奉为英国小说被历史遗忘的母亲之一。然而,与国外方兴未艾的研究浪潮形成鲜明对比的是,国内的学者和文学批评家依然未曾给予阿芙拉以应有的关注,其作品也尚未被翻译成中文,更鲜少被中国的文学爱好者乃至研究者阅读。有鉴于此,笔者力图通过自己的研究,揭开阿芙拉文坛命运浮沉的真实面纱,抛开性别歧视和道德偏见,还其本来面目。作为一个女性,阿芙拉和她的姐妹们一样,同男性同胞相比,被剥夺了很多权利,却承受着更多的道德禁忌。由于生活的圈子相对狭小,与男性作家相比,女作家通常更关注婚恋主题,更关注家庭生活,更关注女性的生存空间和生存境遇。笔者试图以此为角度,分析和探讨阿芙拉小说创作的爱情写作方式以及其小说中呈现出的女性气质。并以此为基点,梳理英国女性小说家的创作情况。关于女性写作传统,自20世纪以来,众说纷纭,莫衷一是。笔者希望能在分析英国女性小说家的小说创作所具有的共同气质的基础上,比较客观也比较谨慎地使用“女性传统”这一提法。最后,在一脉相承的女性小说的历史长河中,揭示阿芙拉在英国文学史上的地位,并强调其从小说创作以及女性观念方面均对后世女作家的创作产生了积极的影响。

Aphra Behn was a prolific dramatist of the restoration and was one of the pioneer English female writers who lived on writting. During her writing life of 20 years, she made great achievements in poems, plays and fictions. Her works includes 19 plays, 14 short stories, amounts of poems and the full-length Novel----Love-Letters between a nobleman and his Sister. Behn's writting greatly influenced the English literary world in the late 17th century. As a maverick female writer, her life and the destiny of her works is full of romance. From the 17th century’s criticism and praise to the 18th century’s completely deny, from the obscurity in 19th century and the rediscovery in the 20th century, the changes during the half and 3 centuries shrouded mysterious veil on this female writer. Facing with the criticism and blame on moral from the critics and students, she never gave up writing. On the contrary, Behn insisted on making explorations and innovations in fictions and plays. And she believed that the reason why she obtained all these criticisms was nothing but her sex identity. With the rediscovering of some female writers lost in the history since the middle of 20th century, Behn has been attracting the researchers’ and critics’ wide concerns, some of whom even consider Behn as one of the lost mothers of novels in the history. Contrary with wide concerns on Behn overseas, Chinese researchers and students almost pay no attention to Behn and her works. Besides, her works has’t been translated into Chinese and few people had read them. So, the author tries to reveal the veil of Behn’s destiny on literature without any sexual bias and moral prejudice. As a woman, Behn as well as other ordinary women was deprived of legal rights and constrained by the moral taboos. Due to limitations of their orbits, compared with male writers, female writers usually concentrate more on marriage, family life and women’s living spaces and circumstances. The author tries to analysis some special traits of Behn’s novels from this view. Then, based on that, the history of the development of English female novelists was unscrambled. Since 20th century, no unanimous conclusion on Female Tradition can be drawn. Based on the analysis of “femininity” and the common spirit shared by the English female novelists, the author hopes to objectively and carefully use the term of “Female Tradition”. At last, the author will reveal Benn’s position in the history of English literature and emphasize her positive influence on English aftertime authoress’ writting on fictions both in practice and conception.
