The aim of this research thesis is to build on the literature of activism in China in the context of the HIV/AIDS epidemic by means of understanding its meaning for Chinese citizens involved in the cause. It begins with an assessment and contextualization of activism in China, the HIV/AIDS epidemic and contemporary social attitudes and stigma attaching to the disease. It then examines, through ethnographic semi-structured narrative interviews, the articulations of self-identification and the discourses that HIV/AIDs activists in Beijing draw upon themselves and others involved in the movement. Finally, I explain and classify the process of their involvement by expressing the correspondence between what they value and how they speak about themselves in their cultural socio-political context. By suggesting a better understanding of how HIV/AIDS activists give meaning to their actions and their role in the movement, this research thesis ultimately serves as another perspective for improving support for activists working on HIV/AIDS in China. This is important for effectively integrating into society people that suffer the stigma associated with the disease and tackling the epidemic.
