Free trade, economic growth, and urbanization are the 3 main forces of globalization; they have lifted millions of people out of poverty, defeated hunger and eliminated numerous diseases. Along with elevating people’s wealth and improving their quality of life it has ultimately increased their waistlines. Globalization has brought a multi-billion dollar western fast food industry to China, this growing love, which only a decade ago was considered absolutely foreign to China has now resulted in a high-fat and high-sugar diet. These foods which are often processed and pre-packed has led to over 300 million Chinese people becoming affected by obesity, diabetes and heart disease, making China, the world’s second most obese nation after the United States. It is not only affecting China’s health, but this drastic shift towards a huge meat consumption diet has had a massive negative impact on the environment. This diet requires an enormous amount of resources, land and water to feed China’s 1.3 billion people. Therefore it has in turn had a drastic effect on all of us as well.
But how did globalization cause this rapid shift from traditional Chinese diets to foreign western food preferences? With an ever increasing wealth margin, price changes on certain foods and easy access to convenient stores and fast food chains, people often forget about another important cause which is “food marketing”. It targets us through every aspect of our lives, promoting unhealthy foods and bigger portions. The food industry spends nearly $2 billion dollars annually to market pre-packed fast foods to children, changing their food preferences and affecting their life's from an early age. If only we could utilize the same techniques that the food industry meticulously uses to promote healthy food and lifestyle, this would lead to a much more healthy and happy future for China’s population, which would also have a positive impact on China’s environment as well.
