This study was conducted to investigate the challenges faced by refugees in Malawi at Dzaleka. The study was guided by three research questions, whose first purpose was to understand the challenges that refugees face, secondly was to establish on how they cope with the challenges and finally try to find best policy practices in addressing the challenges. This study was an exploratory study that employed a qualitative research design. The study used a purposeful random sampling. Data was gathered by using semi-structured interviews to deepen our understanding on refugee experiences and challenges. The study has revealed several challenges however the key notable challenges include physiological needs; safety and security needs and psycho-social suffering. On the question how refugees cope with the challenges, they study found six key coping strategies that refugees use at the camp. These coping strategies differ immensely in the latitude of the challenges faced. These coping strategies include operating small businesses and informal employment; begging for assistance; conducting religious ceremonies; hope and love for children; schooling and self-control. In addition to these findings, this study has also managed to expose some risky coping strategies that refugees at the camp use such as prostitution, excessive beer drinking, and child labour and stealing, these strategies are employed because they have no alternatives to earn a living. Therefore the study concludes, principally with key recommendations from the study participants and relevant secondary data sources. These recommendations are related to local integration to enable refugees engage in economic activities to become self- independent for essential basic needs such as food, water and shelter. |
