Globally education is one of the sectors with devastating impact of COVID-19 pandemic. Before the pandemic, the Nigerian education system has adopted purely, face-to-face approached to teaching and learning in all her various tiers of educational institutions. learners at primary and secondary schools were not allowed to own any digital gadget such as phone or computer, neither were they allowed to be seen with such in the schools, and this affected their exposure with the sudden swap in the teaching and learning mode, following the spread of the covid-19 pandemic. With the emergence of the lockdown condition and school closure, following the COVID-19 pandemic to curtail its spread, both teachers and learners in Nigeria higher institution were helpless about how to continue learning in the face of the pandemic this is because virtual learning is relatively a new phenomenon in the country’s educational system and its supporting factors for effective utilization is lacking. This study centers on the Impacts of Covid-19 Pandemic on Students Adaptability to On-Line/Virtual Teaching and Learning Processes in Nigeria Higher Institutions: From Students Perspectives in University of Nigeria, Nsukka.  These research questions were produced to guide the study: 1. What are the challenges students of HEIs in Nigeria are facing in the utilization of virtual teaching and learning platforms during the COVID-19 outbreak? 2. What supportive measures are provided for the students by the institutions to mitigate these challenges in future? Participants were 12 purposively sampled and conveniently selected students from different faculties in The University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The study utilized semi-structured interview questions in collecting data from the respondents. Participants was selected and interviewed via global online academic research community/platforms, WhatsApp, email and phone calls. All the information and data derived from the interviews granted was transcribed, analyzed and presented in themes. The study found out from the interviews conducted that the SES of the participants had a great influence in their individual experiences towards the questions that were asked. In answering the RQ1, the investigation found out that some of the challenges affected the general students irrespective of their SES; such challenges included (lack of stable network connectivity, unstable power supply and poor feedback or teachers’ students’ relationship) whereas some challenges were specific to individual group of students; such as, (high cost of data, lack of conducive learning environment at home, high cost of gadgets and learning materials, health related challenges).
The responses to RQ2. Indicated that there are many supportive measures from the institutions to help student adapt to online/virtual learning but they weren’t strong enough and faced a lot of challenges. These measures include (a push for quick and full return to a normal physical class, need for a more convenient teaching and learning platforms, strong network connectivity, retraining of lecturers, government interventions).
From the final analysis of the study, it is recommended that the Ministry of Education, the management of higher education institutions in Nigeria need to provide adequate training to the lecturers on the use of online/virtual teaching and learning platforms for efficiency and professionalism. It is also recommended that the management of higher education institutions in Nigeria should strengthen their Wi-Fi connections and make it accessible to all the students on campus. It is recommended also that universities in Nigeria should put into consideration the various students’ interests, conveniency and potential challenges into considerations before making any policy on the teaching and learning processes. There is also a need for government interventions to address these challenges.
