海明威的短篇小说十分受读者喜爱，以语言风格简洁明朗而出名。他在作品、书信和访谈中多次提到省略理论，并且承认在创作小说时遵循了这一理论。本文旨在于从省略理论的角度分析海明威的两篇短篇小说——《白象似的群山》和《雨中的猫》。 遵循省略理论，海明威形成了两种省略——经验内容的省略以及语言形式的省略。通过描写片段场景的人物对话、动作、背景环境，以及重复和象征手法的使用，海明威形成了简洁的语言风格。此外，运用省略理论达到了追求真实性和含蓄的效果目的，写出来的部分暗含未写出的内容，未写出的内容又达到了加强整个故事的作用。因此，本文通过基于省略理论的文本分析，解读海明威在故事中表达的暗含意义，如主人公形象，男女主人公关系的危机，以及尾声时故事的不同走向。

Hemingway’s short stories are well known for his special writing style—brief and concise. Hemingway mentions his principle of omission for many times in his works, letters and interviews. He confirms that he follows this principle when creating stories. This paper aims to analyze two stories “Hills Like White Elephants” and “Cat in the Rain” based on omission. By following the principle of omission in writing, Hemingway makes two types of omission—the omission of content and experience, and the omission of language and form. By describing the partial scene of dialogue, action and setting, and applying repetition and symbolism, Hemingway forms omission and concise language style. Furthermore, using omission achieves the purpose of being true and implicit, by using what is written to imply what is omitted and using the omitted to strengthen the whole story. Through textual analysis based on omission, this thesis analyzes the implicit meaning Hemingway suggests, such as protagonists’ selfishness and loneliness, the crisis of the protagonist’s relationship, and different directions in epilogues.
