Macquarie Island, situated in the sub Antarctic region of the Pacific Ocean, is renowned for its distinctive geological characteristics and rich biodiversity. Since its discovery by humans in 1810, the history of the island's utilization has reflected a transition from predatory exploitation to ecological conservation. In the early 19th century, the exploitation of seal fur and subsequent walrus and penguin blubber transformed the island's wildlife resources into important trading commodities, and the exploitation of these resources became a key driver of economic activity linking the island to the Pacific. However, the depletion of resources and increased global environmental awareness have contributed to the island's ecology experiencing significant changes, deepening human thinking about the use and conservation of nature. Over time, the function of the islands shifted from commercial exploitation to ecological conservation, and in 1933 they were formally established as a national reserve. A review of the century-long exploitation of faunal resources on Macquarie Island reveals that this is more than a simple history of resource plunder or ecological destruction. With a deeper understanding of the natural world and changes in the environment, the way natural resources are exploited and managed has gradually become more standardized and scientific. This not only reflects the evolution of nature itself, but also demonstrates the complex interactions between nature and human activities. The development of environmental ethics has changed the perception of nature as an endless resource to one that respects and protects the health and integrity of ecosystems. In the course of this shift, forces from the public, academia, and government have become actively involved in the management of ecological resources. Scientific research has fueled public awareness and policy responses to ecological crises. Concurrently, the growth of interregional social activities and cultural exchanges has resulted in a continuum of environmental impacts that must be examined from a dynamic and interconnected perspective. The history of Macquarie Island's transformation is not only a local story; it also reveals how globalized exchanges have influenced the global diffusion of environmental policies and conservation strategies, thereby facilitating interactions between cultures and ecosystems and deepening understanding of human-nature interactions. The transformation of Macquarie Island from an economic island to a natural ecological island serves as a testament to the trade-off between short-term benefits and long-term consequences of natural resource exploitation, and reflects a transformation of ecological values. Despite the complex environmental and economic challenges that we face, through cooperation, scientific management, and public participation, we can contribute to the lasting prosperity of the natural world and the harmonious coexistence of human activities. |
