本研究从两个自我概念出发,以青少年为研究对象,采用问卷法,探讨安静自我、条件性自尊与青少年物质主义价值观的相关关系,以及条件性自尊在其中发挥的中介作用。
安静自我(Quiet Ego)是一个与低竞争性、低自我中心、更关心与他人联结的个体以及自我成长相关的概念,安静自我水平高的个体表现出更少防御、更富同情心。条件性自尊(Contingent self-esteem, CSE)是一种基于由他人认可或社会比较的自尊,个体的自尊会随外部事件的成功与失败而波动。可以看出,安静自我更注重内心成长,更内部依赖,是一种平和的自我状态,而条件性自尊更注重外部评价,是一种更外部依赖的自尊,从某种程度上二者是自我的正反两个方面。物质主义(Materialism)是一种强调拥有物质财富重要性的价值观念,包括成功(Success)、中心(Centrality)和幸福(Happiness)三个维度,是研究青少年价值观发展的一个重要变量。
研究结果发现,安静自我与条件性自尊呈现显著负相关关系,表明低竞争性、低自我中心、关注自我成长的个体,自尊更少基于他人认可或社会比较;安静自我与物质主义价值观呈现显著负相关关系,低竞争性、低自我中心、关注自我成长的个体,物质主义价值观越低,更少倾向于将拥有物质作为成功的标准、生活的中心和幸福的来源;条件性自尊与物质主义价值观呈现显著正相关关系,个体的自尊越依赖于他人认可或社会比较等外部事件,其物质主义水平越高。安静自我高的个体,可以预测其具有较低的条件性自尊和物质主义价值观。
进一步分析发现,条件性自尊在安静自我与物质主义价值观之间起显著中介作用,表明安静自我可以通过条件性自尊,预测物质主义价值观。安静自我越高的个体,更多依赖内部评价,关注自我成长,更少注重外部评价,条件性自尊倾向于越低,更不依赖外部事物定义自尊,物质主义价值观倾向于越低。当加入条件性自尊这一中介变量后,安静自我对物质主义价值观的直接效应还存在,故为条件性自尊为部分中介作用。
本研究从自我概念的两个不同侧面,补充了青少年物质主义价值观的研究,在理论研究和教育教学实践上有一定的贡献。

The current study starts from two self-concepts, taking adolescents as research objects, using survey method with a series of questionnaires to explore the relationship between quiet ego, contingent self-esteem and materialism of adolescents, and the mediating effect of contingent self-esteem.
Quiet Ego is a less competitive, less self-centered individual self-concept with more concern with connecting with others and with personal growth. People with high level of quiet ego are less defensive and more compassionate. Contingent self-esteem is self-esteem based on the approval of others or on social comparisons. The success or failure of certain events can result in fluctuations of an individual's self-esteem. It is observed that quiet ego lays more emphasis on inner growth, is more intrinsic-dependent, is a kind of peaceful self-state. Whereas contingent self-esteem lays more emphasis on external judgement, is a kind of extrinsic-dependent self-esteem. Materialism is a value that emphasizes the importance of materials possession, including three components which are success, centrality and happiness, and it’s also an important variable used to study the development of adolescents’ values.
The results show that there is a significantly negative relationship between quiet ego and contingent self-esteem, indicating that if an individual is less competitive, with low self-centered and more care about self-growth, he or she will be less depend on others’ approval or social comparison. There is a significantly negative relationship between quiet ego and materialism indicating that if an individual is less competitive, with low self-centered and more care about self-growth, he or she will have lower level of materialism and less likely to regard the occupying material as the criterion of success, the center of life and the source of happiness. There is also a significantly positive relationship between contingent self-esteem and materialism, indicating that if a person’s self-esteem relies on external factors such as others’ approval or social comparison, he or she will be more likely to have a higher level of materialism. We can predict a person with high quiet ego has low contingent self-esteem and materialism.
The deeper analysis reveal that the contingent self-esteem plays an significant mediating effect between quiet ego and materialism, indicating that quiet ego can predict materialism through contingent self-esteem. Individual with high quiet ego tends to rely on inner judgement and self-growth rather than external judgement, therefore their contingent self-esteem tends to be low, which means he or she does not take external events into account to definite their self-esteem so that has a low materialism. After adding the mediating factor which is contingent self-esteem, there still is a straight effect between quiet ego and materialism, therefore the contingent self-esteem plays a partial mediating role.
The current study using two different aspects of self-concept to replenish the researches of adolescents’ materialism, has theoretical and practical meaning to some extent.
