Self-objectification refers to the phenomenon where women, who have long lived in a sexually objectified environment, gradually internalize the perspective of the objectifying subject, viewing their physical appearance from a third-person perspective and seeing themselves as objects available for observation and evaluation (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). Numerous studies have shown that a high level of self-objectification can bring many negative physical and psychological effects to individuals, such as eating disorders, depression, low self-esteem, emotional distress, and more. Research results indicate that female college students tend to pay more attention to externally communicated aesthetic standards and are more likely to develop a high level of self-objectification, making them the target intervention group for this study.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is one of the representatives of the third generation of cognitive behavioral therapy. It advocates improving individuals' psychological flexibility and encourages them to establish a value-oriented life. This study adopts a case study approach, conducting 10 individual psychological counseling interventions for a female college student with a high tendency toward self-objectification. The aim is to explore the feasibility and effectiveness of ACT intervention in reducing female college students' self-objectification tendencies and improving their psychological flexibility.

This study collects data through scale tests, semi-structured interviews, and participatory observation to evaluate and examine the intervention effects. Research tools include six professional scales: the Self-Objectification Questionnaire, the Body Surveillance Subscale, the Self-Esteem Scale, the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire Second Edition, the Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire-Fusion, and the General Health Questionnaire. Qualitative analysis is conducted using four sources of observation data: verbatim transcripts of semi-structured interviews before and after counseling, counselor observation notes, written counseling materials, and records of the counseling process. The results show that after receiving the intervention, the participant's level of self-objectification decreased, body monitoring level decreased, experienced avoidance decreased, cognitive fusion decreased, and self-esteem and mental health levels showed an upward trend. She demonstrated higher self-acceptance, better emotion regulation ability, and healthier interpersonal relationships.

The results indicate that ACT intervention has a positive effect on female college students with self-objectification tendencies. This study explores the feasibility and effectiveness of ACT intervention for self-objectification in female college students, providing empirical data from a case study for ACT intervention research on self-objectification among Chinese female college students. It enriches the application of ACT in psychological clinical intervention research in China.
