This article demonstrates the historical background of Sadi Carnot’s research
on heat-engine and the results he arrived at, summarizes the following theories by
Clapeyron, Lord Kelvin and Clausius based on Carnot’s treatise, illuminates the fact
that Carnot’s work laid the foundation for the second law of thermodynamics both
in a historical and an inherent way.
