Robert Frost is one of the greatest and most popular poets in the 20th century of America. Many of his poems describe the country life with simple words. His poems are naturai in style, but profound in thought, and are loved by many. He is very good at using metaphor as a poetic vehicle. To him, the core of writing poetry is creating metaphor. By the use of metaphor, Frost expressed his life philosophy in simple words.On the one hand, Frost used metaphor to explain something abstract and difficult to understand, like life. He made such conceptions visible and concrete. On the other hand, Frost indicated his emotions and thought through metaphor. As a poet, he had feelings that could not be described in ordinary language. Metaphor provides a brief and effective way. In addition, metaphor makes poems more vivid, beautiful and implicit.This paper chooses five typical poems of Frost to analyze his use of metaphor. Through metaphor, Mending Wall expresses the poet's thinking of the barrier between people.Birches explains the poet’s philosophy of ideal and reality,or one’s pursuit in life.The Road Not Taken presents readers the conflict of choice,and also the unchangeable result. Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening is the poet's philosophy of life and death: though death is the eternal relief, people have to take on responsibilities in life. The Silken Tent is about restriction and freedom, either between individual and society, or of the form of poetry.
