William Shakespeare (1564-1616), the most prominent literary genius of English Renaissance, constantly devoted himself to poetic writing during his lifetime. His poetic talents are not only demonstrated in his theatrical plays written mainly in blank verses, but also in his five freestanding poems. Among these, Shakespeare's narrative poem Lucrece, published at his time, proves to be a great example to demonstrate a serious print-poet coming of age.
In Lucrece, Shakespeare uses a unique way to present his literary genius by inventing a distinctive writing mode, his self-concealment. Shakespeare conceals his own ethical views towards the heated suicidal discussions in the late Elizabethan era. He foregrounds Lucrece's psychological development, reveals Lucrece's predicament after her rape and makes Lucrece's suicide problematic. Shakespeare also conceals his own political stance. He elaborates on the inner conflicts of Tarquin who is both an assailant and victim. Besides, he explores Brutus's controversial overthrow of the monarchy. In this sense, Shakespeare's political stance becomes dubious. This self-concealment writing mode is Shakespeare's ingenious invention, which can be termed as the result of an active balance of his ambition and anxiety. In the early modern England, the stigma was attached to print due to the elite courtly circles' pride and prejudice. Shakespeare was ambitious to establish himself as a serious print-poet, but he showed an intense anxiety about overtly exposing himself as he shared the idea of "the stigma of print" with his elite readership. Shakespeare is preoccupied with the idea of "publishing", which is also the main concern of his poem, Lucrece. In it, the source of the heroine Lucrece's tragedy is her husband Collatine's egotistic publishing of her beauty and chastity in front of others.
Self-concealment creates ambiguity and ambiguity is followed by diversity, which is a great strength of Shakespeare's Lucrece. Shakespeare's Lucrece is to explore the diversity, to elicit multiple readings of the story and furthermore to invite a varied reading of "myriad-minded" Shakespeare, the author himself; and this aim, is the core of Shakespeare's literary power and his distinctiveness as a Renaissance poet.
