Most of Lin Hai-yin's novels focus on marriage and family as themes. In these numerous family stories Lin have portrayed father images with varying characteristics. This paper focusing on these father images concludes four chapters as follows: The first chapter is about the absent fathers and the fathers as contrasting roles. Early passing fathers have a profound impact on the spiritual growth of their children. Behind fathers who are alive but not really participating in family life is the continuation of women's family roles. The images of mothers, children (mostly daughters) and absent fathers constitute Lin Hai-yin's female story world together. Some weak and incompetent fathers even serve as a foil for the mother and child roles. In a word, these contrasting father images effectively break through the male centrism. Chapter two discusses several ways in which Lin deconstructs the authority of father images. Some authoritative fathers who make their children and wives both respect and fear are actually ordinary people with desires. Some passive fathers do not meet patriarchal requirements, which leads to personal and family tragedies. Other fathers who claim to be considerate of their wives and children but fail to practice are also implicitly mocked by the author. Chapter three introduces growing father images who value family and fatherhood. Typical representatives are prodigal fathers who have returned and poor fathers who love their children. In the last chapter, we analyze the humanistic concern and female perspective in Lin Hai-yin’s father images and her novels. In Lin’s “love stories” she promoted humanistic concern and family values. In terms of female perspective, she didn’t fiercely resist patriarchy and identified it to some extent, but she made her own strategic expressions which contained breakthroughs to the patriarchal order. |
