In Lawrence’s novel Sons and Lovers, the excessive love Paul and his brother William give to their mother makes the relationships between their mother and them surpasses the normal boundary, becoming a typical example of the theory of the Oedipus complex. This paper aims to make a special research on the Oedipus complex in Sons and Lovers. After a short introduction, the first part Literature Review focuses on the connection between Lawrence himself and Sons and Lovers. The second part mainly talks about the Oedipus complex’s representation in Sons and Lovers. In the third part, this paper provides some reasons for the Oedipus complex in Sons and Lovers. In the end, the author of this paper gives his own conclusion that the Oedipus complex is really a very important catalyst of Sons and Lovers’ plot, and it’s caused by several reasons. But at the same time, the novel’s author Lawrence didn’t think he wrote something about the theory of the Oedipus complex.
