Frida has a special place in the art of the 20th century. Different from any other artist in Mexico, she did not allow herself to be influenced by the major artistic trends of the day. Frida describe her first self-portrait as her ‘Botticelli’, her early exploration of the great masters in her work was of short duration, however. On the contrary, while she stressed her independence, she also freely acknowledged her sources of inspiration: pre-Columbia art, and Mexico popular art. Retablos play a special role in Mexico popular art. Frida love such votive pictures, on small metal or wooden panels, and adopted their structures and techniques in some of her work. The story is related both in the picture and in the writing beneath it. Frida’s fantastical imagery greatly impressed Surrealist artist, who immediately claim her as one of their own. She, however, distance herself from them: “They thought I was a Surrealist, but I wasn’t. I never painted dreams.” But such artistic independence did not prevent her from fostering close relations with Surrealist artists. Both Frida and Diego exhibited their work at the international Surrealist Exhibition in Mexico City in 1940. There is no deny the fact that she influenced by Surrealism, but Frida’s style was unique. Frida’s paintings depict her own story. They are graphic and direct, but also full of symbols, metaphors, and ambiguities. Her introspection is both ruthless and eloquent. As she gazes towards us, at times she appears ravishingly beautiful, erotic and self-confident; at others, a thorn necklace cuts into her flesh, telling of the suffering her husband Diego was causing her.
