As a crucial literary theory, Ekphrasis has been increasingly valued by the scholarship. In the broad sense, Ekphrasis means that every representation is a heterogeneous fusion of words and images. From word to image (Enargeia) is an essential aspect of Ekphrasis and a crucial rhetorical technique in literary creation. Enargeia refers to using words and expressions to evoke readers’ visual imagination. As for Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, although the doomsday in the novel is fictional, McCarthy vividly and successfully depicts it and makes it actualized, thus realizing the effect and function of Ekphrasis. This thesis will analyse the representations of Ekphrasis in The Road, including camera language, scenario descriptions, aesthetic taste and theme presentation, to explore the representations and aesthetic function of Ekphrasis. Often recognized as a post-apocalyptic allegorical novel, The Road portrays desolation, violence and despair in detail, which incisively touches the audience to identify with the characters. It tells the story of a nameless father and his son struggling to survive after an unknown apocalypse. Based on the combination of a third-person and first-person perspective, The Road devotes most of its length to depicting the world as seen through the eyes of the father, bringing to life a horrible vision of the apocalypse. McCarthy’s words are concise and highly graphic, which can significantly stimulate readers’ imagination and generate specific scenes, playing a visual narrative effect with diverse and multiple reading experiences. What is behind the doomsday images is McCarthy’s in-depth reflection on the good and evil of human nature and the future of human beings. The Road is a representative work of McCarthy’s return to traditional humanism that advocates the goodness of humanity. He deems that only good guys can carry the fire of civilization and ultimately save human beings. |
