Atonement is a well-known novel written by the English writer Ian McEwan concerning the cause and effect of a girl’s expiation. The book focuses on the depiction of its characters’ psychological activities and their moral code, which has led to a heated discussion. The development of its characters’ relationships involves modern philosophical point of view. This paper applies Levinas’ philosophical views of “subjective of being”, “the face of the other”, “need and desire”, “proximity”, “substitution” and “responsibility” to analyze the behaviors of Briony, the protagonist of Atonement and then concludes her comprehension of interpersonal contact. After that, it points out the faults in the way she acts and corrects her mistakes following Levinas’ principle of ethics. Consequently, this paper shows the practicability of Levinas’ metaphysics about “self and the other”.
